Spotify is expanding its AI feature that creates personalized playlists from text descriptions to more English-speaking territories. Starting today, people in the U.S., Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand with a Spotify Premium subscription (starting at $5.99 per month for students and $11.99 for individuals) will have access to the AI playlists in beta when it launches first in the U.K. and Australia earlier this year.

Subscribers can find this feature in the mobile app by clicking the “+” button in the top right corner of their Spotify library. Selecting “AI Playlist” from the drop-down menu will open a chat window to describe the playlist they want, such as “spooky songs to listen to on Halloween” or “soothing folk music for a relaxing swim.” The feature will also provide suggested tips. The AI Playlist beta is not currently available on the Spotify desktop or web apps.

Created playlists contain 30 songs and can be adjusted with additional prompts to better fit the desired mood, such as requesting more upbeat music. Descriptions that include genre, era, mood, artist, etc. perform better, but in my own testing, I found that the app can match songs even with niche descriptions like "makes me feel like a vampire hunter from Blade." Spotify says that while the feature is in beta, it continues to "actively learn and improve with each share," and may make changes to improve AI playlists in the future.
