Mastodon will add quote posts, even though some users don’t want them

Mastodon is introducing a feature called Quotes Stations to help users access Fediverse from their main social networks.

Mastodon turns a long position against quote posts that cause mixed reactions between users. The decentralized social platform announced on Friday that it is working to introduce the feature to help more people open Freedivers from their main social networks. Initially, Mastodon avoided quoting posts and believed they could be misused to persecute or remove posts from context.

Nevertheless, the platform recognizes that their absence has discouraged some users from participating. Critics say cited messages promote toxic interactions on platforms like Twitter, but Mastodon is trying to ease these issues, so users control who can quote publications and are quoted. You can delete content from the context at any time. Mastodon is about to add a cited publication, but technical issues remain. This function is not standardized as part of Activity Pub, a protocol that feeds to Mastodon and other distributed platforms.

Additionally, Quotes Stations integration requires significant changes to the Mastodon codebase, which takes time to develop. There is no official release deadline, but Mastodon is working to ensure that other Eduverse platforms can implement this feature as well. The platform is committed to recognizing the divided opinions of the community and being transparent throughout the process.
