Apple is updating its Maps app to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. The change began rolling out today to users in the United States, and reports indicate it will soon be visible to users around the world.
This follows a similar update to Google Maps earlier this week, which began showing "American Bay" to users in the U.S. The name change follows an executive order signed by former President Donald Trump in January, and was recently added to the Federal Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). Unlike Apple, Google Mapsadjusts the display name based on location: users in Mexico will still see "Gulf of Mexico," but maps for other regions will show "Gulf of Mexico" with "Gulf of America" in parentheses.
The change has not yet been implemented in other navigation services, including Bing and Microsoft's MapQuest. Apple Maps is available on iPhone, iPad and Mac, and is in beta on the web. Apple has not yet released details about the update.
