Colossal Cave Adventure (AKA: Adventure or ADVENT) was released in 1976 by developer Will Crowther for the PDP-10 mainframe computer. It was expanded in 1977 by Don Woods. In the game, players explore a cave system filled with treasure and gold. It is the first famous example of interactive fiction and the first famous adventure game of the same name. It was originally based on Crowther's map and experience at Mammoth Cave in Kentucky (the longest cave system in the world, and was created in part to make it accessible to non-technical players like his two daughters). Woods' version expanded the scale of the game and increased the number of fantasy elements it contained, such as dragons and magic spells. Both versions, typically played over teletypewriters connected to mainframe computers, were spread around the nascent ARPANET, the precursor to the Internet that Crowther helped develop.

Colossal Cave is regularly noted as one of the most influential video games, and in 2019 was inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame by The Strong and the International Center for the History of Electronic Games. In 2020, Ken and Robert Williams were founded for 20 years and is running online at Sierra.

Ken and Robert Williams founded Sierra in 1979 and sold it in 1996. At that time, it was one of the largest industry deals in history. Thanks to Activision Blizzard's acquisition, Sierra is now part of Microsoft. Ken and Roberta bought a boat when they retired. Ken acquired both an American and European captain's license and they decided to pursue true adventure by sailing around in a small boat. In 2020, Ken wrote a bestselling book chronicling the Sierra days, inspiring the pair to form Cygnus Entertainment and play "just one more game". Whether there will be more is unknown at this time, but they are very proud of Colossal Cave. Ken Williams said, “When I saw Apple's Vision Pro, a $3,500 device, it blew my mind, I studied it to see what cool ideas I could do on the infinitely cheaper Quest 3. . I also wanted to see if we could expand on Apple's ideas and come up with some tricks of our own. Much of Sierra's success came from surprising people with things they hadn't seen before. Quest 3 owners will be delighted.
