Wang Jian, who was previously the head of Alibaba's money-making cloud and AI division, estimates that roughly 90% of AI applications we see today especially those that are coming to market in the post-ChatGPT hysteria chips will not exist in five to ten years. To Wang, many AI applications today are just noise and do not really address the essence of many issues; and many others, are treatments of non-serious science and technology.
He has a firm conviction that the AI tsunami created by ChatGPT distorted truth, reality, and the ongoing reality. He identifies that the authentic progress is generated from fearless, and creative solutions to problems not talent deficit, it is clear "the right person is more than paying for a wage" he said.
Wang's consequential track record includes founding Alibaba Cloud and was built on building the Qwen large language model as Alibaba's analogue of GPT & Gemini. He points to a platform that has an intrinsic value of over $16 Billion dollars; and is a strong use of strategic innovation to build an ecosystem.
Looking forward, Wang argues that China's tremendous tech ecosystem is a good real-world laboratory - there will be a lot of AI experimentation. He claims to be cautiously optimistic that the innovation - not the hype - will self-identify the field leaders.
