In a post on X, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared the roadmap for the company's upcoming AI models, GPT-4.5 and GPT-5. Along with these updates, Altman acknowledged the growing complexity of OpenAI's product line and expressed a commitment to simplifying the user experience. GPT-4.5, internally known as Orion, will be OpenAI’s final model without chain-of-thought reasoning, according to Altman.
This follows previous reports last year that hinted at the development of Orion. Going forward, OpenAI aims to integrate its O-series and GPT-series models into a unified system that uses all available tools, dynamically adjusts inference time, and can effectively handle a wide range of tasks. Rather than offering o3 as a standalone model, OpenAI plans to integrate its features into GPT-5. Once GPT-5 is available, ChatGPT users will get unlimited access to chat at a standard intelligence level, while Plus subscribers will get an enhanced version.
Altman didn’t give an exact release date for GPT-4.5 or GPT-5 but suggested they could appear in the “coming weeks or months.” Meanwhile, Elon Musk has reportedly made a $97.4 billion offer to acquire OpenAI’s nonprofit arm, though the company’s board is expected to reject the offer.
