Apple has worked with the Chinese car manufacturer for many years to develop a battery system for its current automotive project. It is according to Bloomberg, who reports that Apple works with Byd Co. based on Shenzhen, for the development of a battery using cellular lithium cells (LFP). Apple provided expertise in engineering, especially in fields such as heat management and advanced battery packs, but BYD provided manufacturing resources and unique LFP technology.
The battery was intended to be safer than most EV batteries at the time for each Bloomberg. Apple abandoned plans to build the car in February after spending roughly $1 billion a year on the project since 2014. Though the project ultimately never came to fruition, the effort wasn't a complete failure: According to Bloomberg, battery knowledge gained during the car project helped other Apple teams develop its Vision Pro and Neural Engine chips.
