YouTube Shorts’ Dream Screen feature can now generate AI video backgrounds

YouTube on Thursday announced that its Dream Screen feature for short films can now use AI-generated video backgrounds. Previously, Dream Screen could only create image backgrounds. This new feature is made possible through the integration of Google DeepMind's artificial intelligence (AI) video generation model Video, which can generate a variety of cinematic-style 1080p video clips.

Users can now use this feature to turn text suggestions into AI-powered video backgrounds. To access this function, you need to move to a short camera, press the green screen icon and select a "dream screen". From there, you can introduce indexes, such as "scenery of occupation" and "magic forest with streams". Next, select the animation style and click Create.

On the dream screen, a series of videos that can be selected are created. You can save the video as soon as you select AI video. YouTube says the new feature can be used for things like immersing yourself in the setting of your favorite book or creating animated intros for short videos.

In the future, YouTube plans to allow creators to use Dream Screen to create individual six-second video clips for short videos. It's worth noting that YouTube gives short-video creators access to features that aren't available on TikTok, the leading short-video platform: While TikTok lets creators generate AI-powered background images, the company doesn't currently allow the creation of video backgrounds. This new feature is currently available in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
