Meta cancels plans for high-end Vision Pro rival

Meta has canceled its high end mixed reality headset, La Jolla, to compete with Apple's Vision Pro.

Meta is calling it quits on making a high-end mixed reality headset to compete with the Apple Vision Pro, The Information reports. This is despite recent news that the headset, codenamed La Jolla, would arrive sometime in 2027. According to The Information, Meta began development of the La Jolla headphones in November, but last week notified staff to stop development of the device. Part of the reason for this decision is that the La Jolla headphones will use expensive MicroOLED displays.

The move suggests that Meta might be suspicious of the idea of premium VR in general. The goal was reportedly to keep the headset under $1,000, which was looking increasingly difficult given how expensive MicroOLEDs can be to manufacture.

The difficult thing is that the $ 3,500 Vision Pro has worked hard to influence customers and developers and thus advertise whether they are interested in competitors with high forces. The QUEEST PRO, which was launched at a price of $ 1,499, was reviewed and quickly faded from the Quest Pro from the center of attention that is not available. Officially, however, Meta appears to be downplaying the decision to cancel La Jolla.

"We have developed many prototypes. However, we did not allow them to produce them all. "We moved forward with some people and we moved others. Decisions like this happen all the time, and stories based on one individual decision will never reflect the real situation.

However, Meta plans to launch more headsets and mixed reality technology in the near future. Meta will reportedly show off some new AR glasses at their Meta Connect event next month. Likewise, Quest 4 is rumored to launch in standard and premium editions sometime in 2026.
