OpenAI has officially launched ChatGPT Search, its AI-powered web search tool, for all ChatGPT users, including free-tier users. This expansion comes with a suite of new features aimed at improving accessibility and user experience. By default, ChatGPT will intelligently decide whether to route a query through ChatGPT Search. The tool delivers concise, summarized responses sourced from across the web, along with enriched content like embedded images and YouTube videos.

Originally introduced as SearchGPT earlier this summer, ChatGPT Search evolved into its current form in October and leverages a specialized version of OpenAI’s GPT-4o model. The feature enables users to retrieve real-time information, including news updates, sports scores, financial data, and more, while providing links to relevant sources. Users can then refine their search through follow-up questions.

Previously, ChatGPT Search was exclusively available to premium subscribers, but OpenAI has now extended the tool to non-paying users as well.  During a livestream event on Monday, OpenAI highlighted key improvements to ChatGPT Search. It is now faster and can even be configured as the default search engine on any web browser. Additionally, mobile users are set to benefit from a more streamlined experience, with enhancements such as better-organized business details, including addresses (accessible via Apple Maps in the iOS app) and phone numbers.

Another notable update is the integration of ChatGPT Search into Advanced Voice Mode, OpenAI’s real-time conversational interface. In the near future, users on both mobile and desktop will be able to access live web information while using this voice feature.

Earlier this year, reviews of ChatGPT Search, including tests conducted by my colleague Max Zeff, reflected a mixed reception. However, OpenAI appears committed to refining the tool further, positioning it as a significant step forward in its growth strategy.
