Google is launching its new productivity app Vids in Workspace Labs with the idea: "If you can make a slide, you can make a video in Vids." Announced in April, Vids allows users to drag documents, slides, voiceovers and video recordings onto a timeline to create a presentation video that can be shared with colleagues. By making it available in Workspace Labs preview, Workspace admins will be able to allow users to try out the AI-powered video creation software.
Vids can generate videos, but don't confuse it with AI tools like OpenAI's Sora, which can create realistic sequences from prompts. Instead, Vids is all about describing what you want Gemini to create and generating a presentation, allowing you to edit the video afterwards. You can also manually start drafting a Google Vids presentation using one of the many templates available, and there's also free standard content to enhance your creation.
But as the video demo shows, a key feature is that Gemini can be used to automatically insert video footage without the user having to say anything, create a script, and even provide an AI narration for your next presentation.
