Apple recently announced plans to incorporate artificial intelligence into iOS 18 and new iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models, and has begun discussions with potential generative AI partner Meta.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple has been in talks with Meta to integrate its generative artificial intelligence models used across platforms into Apple Intelligence, a plan announced at WWDC earlier this month. We previously reported that Apple has been in talks with other major AI players, such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, to partner on new AI features. Since then, Apple Intelligence has integrated OpenAI's leading GPT-4o into its ecosystem as its first official partner. Apple software chief Craig Federighi said at the time that the company "wanted to start with the best," noting that OpenAI's ChatGPT "represents the best option for our users today."
According to the Wall Street Journal, "Meta and other companies developing generative artificial intelligence hope to take advantage of Apple's massive distribution through the iPhone — similar to what Apple offers on iPhones through the App Store."
The report suggests that if Apple strikes deals with partners beyond OpenAI, \"customers could choose which external AI models they want to use in addition to Apple’s internal systems\".
In July 2023, Meta released its own large language model, Llama 2, followed by new AI models — aptly named Llama 3 — in April this year. While Llama has been adopted by much of the tech world, a deal with Apple could strengthen its legacy in artificial intelligence. However, the Wall Street Journal noted that these discussions are not yet complete and could fall through.
