Google Play Books purchases on iOS now skirt the App Store’s commission

Google has received permission to sell e-books and audiobooks directly to users through iOS and Google Play Books applications. This change allows users to press the "Get Book" button on the application to complete their purchase to redirect to the Google Play website. After clicking the link, users will see a full-screen notice informing them that they are no longer transacting with Apple.

This move follows Apple’s legal battle with Epic Games, which resulted in a ruling that Apple must allow app developers to link to their own websites for purchases. By processing transactions externally, Google avoids Apple’s standard 30% commission on in-app purchases.

Google’s decision to implement this feature may have been influenced by the resolution of that case. The company submitted a request to outside entry in 2022 after Apple restrictions on Japan's Fair Trade Commission. Additionally, books purchased from Google Play can now be split into devices using the Google Play Family Library, making them more practical for families using a variety of platforms.
