TikTok now has surfaced its app users with sending users private and group chat DMs with voice notes and up to nine photos/videos. The intention of this feature added to DMs is to transition TikTok as a fun destination to a social destination. TikTok as an app allows its users to send voice notes that are one minute long, and follows a trend of similar voice note functionality already existing with WhatsApp, Apple's Messages and Instagram.
The voice note addition is particularly relevant since many of TikTok's Gen Z users are increasingly adopting audio as their mode of communication. Along with voice notes, users can send photos and videos at any time, new or old ones already saved in their camera rolls. Users can also edit the photos or videos with the intention to show their creative sell, before Dm ing or sharing them.
However, to protect users, TikTok begins with restrictions that block users from initially sending a photo or video. For example, if users DM someone for the first time, they cannot send a photo or video of their own, they can only share content previously shared by TikTok.
In order to continue protecting its users, especially teenagers, TikTok has implemented systems to automatedly detect and block images that contain nudity. When an image is detected, if the app is unable to automatically block the image, the sender is blocked from sending images to the user and the user will not see the nudity. Users who are 18 or older will still have the option to turn this safety feature on if they desire in their app settings.
These updates show TikTok's continued commitment to create a safer environment and maintain a fun and engaging place for users where the safety and privacy of its users still comes first.
