Apple is reportedly developing a smart doorbell camera with Face ID functionality, according to Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter. The device, which could debut by late 2025, aims to revolutionize home access by using facial recognition to unlock doors.
Similar to the Face ID feature on iPhones, the camera would automatically unlock the door for recognized residents. It would incorporate Apple’s Secure Enclave chip to securely store and process facial recognition data, keeping it isolated from other hardware components for enhanced privacy.
The smart doorbell is expected to integrate seamlessly with third-party HomeKit-enabled smart locks, and Apple may collaborate with a smart lock manufacturer to launch a comprehensive system from the outset. Additionally, the device is rumored to utilize Apple’s proprietary “Proxima” Wi-Fi/Bluetooth chip, which is anticipated to feature in upcoming HomePod Mini and Apple TV models.
This smart doorbell is part of Apple’s broader effort to strengthen its presence in the smart home market, with a focus on what’s being called “Apple Intelligence.” Other rumored devices in the works include a new smart home camera, an Apple-branded TV, and innovative smart home displays.
One display is said to resemble an iPad that magnetically attaches to wall mounts or speaker stands, while another features a robotic arm affixed to a larger base for added flexibility. These developments highlight Apple’s growing ambition to lead in smart home technology.
