    Nvidia's Jensen Huang suggests 'plans' for its own desktop CPU

    Nvidia plans to enter the consumer processor market in 2025, launching Project Digits, a $3,000 AI supercomputer with a 20-core Arm architecture.

    Nvidia appears poised to make a bold push into the consumer processor market in 2025, and the first signs of its ambitions could be revealed at CES 2025. During the event, Nvidia unveiled Project Digits, a $3,000 personal AI supercomputer powered by the Grace Blackwell GB10 superchip, which features a new 20-core processor based on the Arm architecture. While the product is primarily aimed at AI developers, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang hinted that there are broader plans for the new processor.


    At an investor presentation, Huang teased, “You know, obviously we have plans,” though he stopped short of confirming details about bringing the CPU to the consumer market, saying, Huang suggested that MediaTek selling the chips on its own would create a win-win scenario for both companies.

    While Project Digits itself is far from a consumer product, it's clear that Nvidia's involvement in desktop processors goes beyond just niche hardware. Rumors of Nvidia’s entry into the Arm-based CPU market first surfaced in late 2023, with reports suggesting a 2025 launch as the company seeks to challenge established players like Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm.


    The competition in Arm-based CPUs for Windows PCs is heating up, especially following the success of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite processors in 2024. These chips offered a competing performance and energy efficiency of the Apple M series chips, forcing the X86 ecosystem to innovate or risky market share. 


    In particular, the entrance to NVIDIA may still be accelerated because the arm windows continue to mature and continue to acquire the ground. If Nvidia delivers on its consumer processor promises, 2025 could mark a turning point in the ongoing battle between x86 architecture, long dominated by Intel and AMD, and Arm-based solutions that are becoming increasingly viable for high-performance consumer PCs.
