You can't buy Meta's most impressive new product, the smart glasses codenamed Orion. You might be able to buy something similar in a few years, but most of us will never be able to wear them. But that doesn't necessarily make them less impressive or less important. Orion is the Meta motto: AR glasses really are the future, and we'll get there eventually.
Alex Heath shares his experience with Orion, spending two hours inside the futuristic glasses with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Zuckerberg played table tennis, made smoothies, and did all kinds of other things. together. He also tells us about his conversations with Zuckerberg (subscribe to Decoder!) about the future of AR, AI, and pretty much everything. All of this news was posted on Meta Connect, so we looked at all the other announcements from Connect as well.
There are new smart glasses, new VR headsets, new celebrity AI to replace the old celebrity AI, voice modes and more. But let's be honest: we're mostly talking about Orion. It's either steam software, a science project, a prototype, an undeniable future, or somewhere in the middle of a Venn diagram of all these things. The fact that they exist says a lot about where we are in technology.
Once we're finally done with Meta, we'll dive into all the governance and business changes happening in OpenAI. Then it's time for a lightning round where we chat about the new Jony Ive profile, a pixelated look at the PS5 Pro, praise Google's recent line of great gadgets, and wonder how many people are still using their Rabbit R1s. Today, there are many artificial intelligence devices.
