According to MacRumors, Apple will equip all four models of the upcoming iPhone 16 series (iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro and Pro Max) with the same processor. This would mark a departure from the iPhone 15 series, which uses different processors for the base and Pro models. Model numbers for the upcoming iPhones have surfaced online, indicating that Apple will not differentiate processors between the baseline and Pro variants of the iPhone 16 series.
The report notes that Apple has internally listed the new iPhone models with the same "17" prefix in their model numbers. Within the iPhone 15 series, the baseline iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are prefixed with "15," while the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are prefixed with "16." Apple later announced that the iPhone 15 Pro models will be powered by the A17 Pro chip, while the standard model will use the A16 Bionic chip. However, as macumors reported, the iPhone 16 series may change.
Although all four iPhone 16 models are expected to use the new A18 chip, Apple can still distinguish the Pro model by merging more graphic treatment units (GPU) cores. This strategy can help distinguish the Pro model from the Standard iPhone 16 variant. In addition, Apple may call the chip in the PRO model as the A18 Pro. iPhone SE
The report also mentions that Apple's internal data includes a fifth iPhone model, possibly the expected iPhone SE. This model also has the prefix "17", which suggests that it will use the same chipset as the other four smartphones in the iPhone 16 series. If correct, Apple could use the processing power of the new chips to bring advanced AI features to the iPhone SE.
