Google is apparently about to go from the design of the Dongle HDMI of all its streaming devices passed in favor of a more conventional decoder. 9TO5GOOGLE has published images of the upcoming product, which is apparently called "Google TV Streamer". So not only the appearance of past chromecastes disappears, but the name too. The new device has a sloped top and an overall design that's consistent with other recent Google hardware. As for the included remote, it's nearly identical to the one that came with the previous-generation Chromecast, but it's longer and has the volume buttons on the front. Google TV Streamer is expected to debut at the company's hardware event on August 13, along with many other products, including the Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Pixel 9, Pixel Watch 3, and Pixel Watch 3 XL. And maybe there will be other surprises.
I've been waiting for Google to create a more powerful streaming player that could be a serious competitor to the Apple TV 4K. The Chromecast with Google TV, introduced in 2020, never made an appearance, leaving the Nvidia Shield as a better alternative in terms of performance. In a few weeks, we'll have a better idea of whether Google will raise the price of the Google TV Streamer or control the specs to hit Google's usual sub-$100 price point.
