An event called "Made by Google" Pixel will happen on August 13, and through its social media, Google has already confirmed that it is finally going to introduce the Pixel 9 Pro and foldable Pixel 9 Pro Fold. The company's Pixel 8 and 8 Pro were launched in October last year, but it seems that Google wants to release its phones before Apple unveils its iPhone 16 lineup. All phones from Google offer decent performance, rich software support, and innovative AI-powered features but cutbacks on some specifications in the new model in a pocket-friendly deal the price tag of $499 for the Pixel 8A.
There have been some key bits of information we can gather about the upcoming range from both Google's own official social media channels to the usual leaksters and tipsters showing off renders and leaked specs for months now.
13th August 2024 Launch
Google generally releases new Pixel devices in October, as was done with the Pixel 8 and Pixel 7 series, but this time the company officially sent out invites for its Pixel hardware event on August 13th and partly announced some products on the very same day. One can only guess why it is that Google has changed the launch date, but it might do so to get their phones in front of the public before Apple unveils its upcoming iPhone 16 lineup in September.
The teaser above, that was posted to the official Made by Google YouTube channel, focuses on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, bragging about all-new design and camera layout before confirming the August 13 launch date.
Three (or Four) Pixel 9 Models
A rumor that surfaced after being reported by Android Authority in late 2022 has it that instead of the normal two models, there will be three different models for the Pixel 9 smartphone. While we would still be getting a base Pixel 9 model, the flagship Pro line might have two variants: one large and one small. It will be small in size, much akin to the base model, but feature high-end cameras that are usually added only to the larger models. The 9 Pro XL has increased specs with a bigger screen. There, the strategy shifts a bit closer to Apple's usual approach: typically an iPhone base model, then two Pro phones of different sizes with better cameras.
The fourth model is the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, an incremental update to the original Pixel Fold, launched in June 2023. After all, we were expecting more on Google's new foldable however, the company talked only about AI updates, with new folding hardware being conspicuous by its absence. We were sort of hoping to see some kind of nod toward the phone back in early June, but a new Google teaser video confirms that we'll have to wait just a little while longer for an August unveiling.
