Two ballsy smartwatches from Garmin have resurfaced: the Fenix 8 and the Enduro 3 series. Built-in speaker and microphone along with extra training features for their top-of-the-line flagship device the $999.99 Fenix 8. With LED flashlight, solar charging, 320 hours battery life in GPS mode, the Enduro 3 retails at $899.99.
A theme for this Fenix 8 update would be making it a smarter device while giving athletes more choices. This implies that with its inbuilt speaker and microphone, you can make or receive calls on your wrist and use voice commands such as “set timer for five minutes.” Not even a phone connection is needed for voice commands such as these ones. It’s not very new in Garmin system; earlier on it was demonstrated by Venu 2 Plus but that’s not something you can do with Fenix line. In addition, there is an introduction of Garmin Messenger which will allow you communicate with relatives and friends from your watch (you need to have installed this application on both phones). On Fenix 8, one can select between an OLED display and an always-on display that is capable of working with solar charging; each comes in three different sizes: 43mm, 47mm, and 51mm. Doing this has led to an affection for using OLEDs in many of Garmin’s watches.
However, numerous outdoor addicts go for dimmer displays with prolonged life during outdoor activities. For those people, Garmin asserts this time around the new solar display is more effective than others but it still matters on how you use it. The solar models come in 47mm and 51mm sizes with an estimated battery life of 29 and 48 days respectively which is significantly much longer than that found on standard fenix 8 models such as 10 (43mm); 16 (47mm); or 29 (51mm).
In terms of design, fenix gets a new sensor protection feature besides “waterproof” metal buttons. It will have additional sleek LED lights plus ECG capabilities which were introduced by Garmin through fenix 7 pro and epix pro last year. Moreover, there are advanced strength-training workouts in 4-to-6-targeted programs specific to some sports as new fitness features from Garmin. Besides that, diving functions and a new map interface have been included too.
The Enduro 3 will enjoy some of these enhancements as well: built-in flashlight; advanced strength training plans; garmin messenger app; ECG; all now solar charging capable. For those who love the great outdoors, solar powered Enduro’s are an obvious choice. The name alone suggests it’s meant for people whose idea of fun is running long miles across mountainous terrains. In addition, Integrated into this particular type camera there is a solar lens that offers 320 hours of battery life in GPS mode and only lasts 120 hours when using a power hungry dual-frequency GPS.
